Bekaa Valley

All the major wineries from Lebanon have their vineyards situated in the southern Bekaa Valley. The French influence between the two World Wars promoted a culture of wine drinking in the country, as did the sophisticated Mediterranean culture of Beirut at that time. Lebanese winemakers traditionally favour French grape varietals as a result, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Rhone varietals such as Cinsaut, Carignan and Grenache.
Today over 50% of the wines made in Lebanon are exported to places like the UK and USA.
