France
What is there to say about French wine that hasn’t already been said a thousand times before? The granddaddy, the boss, the number one – or should that be numéro un – when it comes to wine, nowhere can really come close to France. The sheer range of regions, styles, flavours, and vintages mean there is more to be taken from French wine than any other region in the world. Having come through a slightly difficult period over the last decade or two competing the innovation and technology at the disposal of the New World wine makers, the French are finally starting to learn from the newcomers whilst managing to retain their unique and indomitable Frenchness.

  8. Jean Noel Haton 'Extra' Brut Champagne
    Rating:
    100% of 100

Haton is one of the lesser known but well established Champagne houses and the 4th generation family is part of the top 30 producers of Champagne, in volume. Even though they produce a larger amount than most, the quality is assured as each grape variety and plot are vinified separately in more than 100 stainless steel tanks. Final blending is undertaken by father and son to maintain a high quality level and consistency of each cuvée.

Haton Extra Brut is a delightful golden yellow with fabulous effervescence that forms a delicate and persistent chain of fine bubbles. The nose is elegant and fine, with notes of fresh fruit (redcurrant, peach and apricot) and citrus fruit (grapefruit and orange). The palate is fresh and generous and the finish is as elegant as every fine champagne should be.

“With some attractive, toasty age, this is a full and rich Champagne. It’s finely balanced apple and citrus flavors are layered with hints of almonds. The “Extra” in the name refers to the range of wines from Haton rather than the level of dryness.” 91pts Wine Enthusiast

  9. Taittinger Cuvee Prestige, Brut Champagne

The brilliant body is golden yellow in colour. The bubbles are fine, while the bubbles are discreet yet lingering. The nose, very open and expressive, delivers aromas of fruit and brioche. It also gives off the fragrance of peach, white flowers (hawthorn, acacia) and vanilla pod. The entry onto the palate is lively, fresh and in total harmony. This is a delicate wine with flavours of fresh fruit and honey. Taittinger Brut Réserve, which acquires its maturity during three and four years ageing in the cellar, offers excellent aromatic potential.

"An appealing purity and a fresh citrus fruit taste, along with a gently toasty character from more than three years ageing in contact with the wine’s lees. It is quite a full, creamy style of Champagne, but with a squeaky clean, bright finish, making it an excellent all-rounder in the competitive world of Brut NV Champagnes." The Drinks Business
