Piemonte Dolcetto Merlot, Rocca Estate, 2015
This velvety smooth red wine by Angelo Rocca merges the old Piedmont grape variety, Dolcetto, to a relative newcomer in the area, Merlot. The result is a new, soft and round style with fruit and red berries with hints of spices and balanced acidity.

At the end of XIX century, Francesco Rocca started his historical business by selling loose wine. In 1936 his son Angelo enhanced the wine production and built a cellar in Nardò, Apulia. In the 1960's the first bottling line was bought and thus started the distribution of products under the Rocca brand. Today, Ernesto Rocca (the founder's grandson) shares responsibility with his sons Paolo, Marco, Luca and Matteo who help run the family business, a business which also includes a construction company and a leading trot horse stud farm.

The Piedmont (or Piemonte) wine region is Italy’s largest – the thick fogs of the region known as nebbia, giving rise to Piedmont’s signature grape variety, Nebbiolo. Found in the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines, the difficult grape produces some truly spectacular wines when handled correctly. Piedmont is more than a one trick pony though, and other red grapes fare particularly well in the region, notably Barbera and Dolcetto. Cortese is the main white grape of the region and goes into the wonderfully floral and finessed Gavi wines.
