Mission Estate Hawke's Bay Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015This Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep vibrant colour and a nose that has complex aromas of cassis, coffee and tobacco. The palate is medium to full-bodied with nice acidity and a fine structure. The tannins are ripe and the flavours mature. This is a classic ripe Cabernet that has good palate complexity. Merlot-Cabernet Franc 'Jewelstone', Mission Estate Single Vineyard, 2010The Gimblett Gravels region in the famed Hawke’s Bay has become one of New Zealand’s fine wine regions with some wines outclassing several Bordeaux First Growths. The 2009 vintage of this wine did just that at a blind tasting in Hong Kong and at less than half the Jewelstone’s modest price too.
The 2010 vintage is just as good however you’ll find it more in the style of Pomerol than Médoc. Aged mostly in (expensive) new oak this seriously good red is ripe, rich and smooth.
Leads off with cedar and vanilla notes, but develops plenty of dark, chocolaty flavours on the palate, giving a sense of richness and depth. It's up there with the world's best. Decant and enjoy on special occasions. Learn More£29.50
Syrah 'Jewelstone', Mission Estate Single Vineyard, 2009Mission Estate is one of Hawke's Bays largest established wineries, with a well-respected reputation. Established in 1851 by the French Marist religious order, Mission Estate Winery is New Zealand's oldest winemaker.
This wine has a inky deep crimson colour which delivers generous flavours on the palate. Rich and mouth filling with ripe fruit, creamy oak and ripe tannins which add structure and a wonderful balance of fruit and oak. You will find plums, blueberries, a touch of liquorice, a suggestion of anise and lingering pepper on the savoury finish. Totally delicious and a very rare wine! Mission Estate Huchet Syrah, Gimblett Gravels, 2013
The Mission Estate story begins with a group of French Missionaries who sailed to New Zealand with little more than their faith and a few vines. The first record of a commercial sale dates back to 1870 when a parcel of mostly dry reds was sold. The Cellar Master at this time was Brother Cyprian Huchet, the son of a French vigneron from the Loire. Having grown up amongst the vineyards and wine cellars in France, Cyprian Huchet’s wine knowledge became extremely sophisticated and he bought this wealth of knowledge to Mission Estate.
Mission Huchet Syrah is a tribute to Cyprian Huchet and Mission’s 160 year heritage. Crafted with devotion, combining leading edge technologies and Old World techniques, Huchet is a bold wine of heart & depth with pure dark berry aromas along with some spice components. The palate is full-bodied with fine soft tannins and an array of complex aromas. These fine tannins provide an amazing texture that is velvety and mouth filling and which frame a depth of rich complex aromas which persist long on the finish. If you can resist opening this wine for 10-20 years, you will be rewarded with a wine that is even more silky and fine.
