The wine region of Central Otago on the New Zealand’s South Island is the most southerly wine region in the world. Based in and around the stunning mountains and lakes surrounding Queenstown, you could be forgiven for thinking that vines could never be successful here. However the climate of Central Otago is ripe for cultivating grapes with hot spots on the shores of lakes and beneath sheer rock faces, long hot summer days followed by cool crisp nights. The result is memorable – ripe fruit flavours finely balanced by high acid. Pinot Noir is the star here, and is by far the most grown grape in Central Otago.
Mission Estate Central Otago Reserve Pinot NoirThis excellent Pinot Noir is deep garnet in colour and has a lovely nose dominated by dark cherry and violets.
