Fete Cuvee Sparkling, Mission Estate
A hand harvested cuvée crafted to celebrate Mission Estate's 160 years of winemaking and pioneering heritage. Named Fête (to honour the winery's French roots) this soft and light sparkling wine is made in the Champagne method giving it delicious creamy characteristics, delicate pear aromas and a fine, persistant mousse.
Unlike Champagne this wine is made from predominantly Pinot Gris grapes with a little Chardonnay fruit thrown in. These grapes were hand harvested from the Mission Estate Taradale vineyard, and pressed very gently in the traditional manner. In the mouth the wine sings across the palate showing a persistent and fresh moreish finish.

Mission Estate Winery
The story begins with a group of French Missionaries who sailed to New Zealand in 1838 with little more than their faith and a few vines. Mission Estate was established by these Missionaries in Hawke's Bay in 1851, where vines were planted to produce both sacramental and table wine, and New Zealand's first winery was born. The first record of a commercial sale dates back to 1870 when a parcel of mostly dry reds was sold.
Mission has never lost sight of its French heritage, as over the years Brothers of the Order have travelled to France to study and learn viticulture and winemaking skills. Our current winemaker Paul Mooney has been at Mission for over 30 years, and was originally trained by the Fathers.
At 'La Grande Maison' of Mission Estate there is still one row of Muscat grapes that have been grafted over the years from the very original stock bought to Hawke's Bay by the Marist Fathers.

Situated around the Coastal town of Napier, Hawke’s Bay was more or less the birthplace of New Zealand wine when French Marist missionaries started to plant vines in the mid-19th century. In fact, Mission Estate – producers of our flagship New Zealand wines – is the country’s oldest winery. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and similar Bordeaux style blends prospered particularly well in this region after serious cultivation of wines began in the 1970s. The favourable Hawkes Bay climate and complexities in the soils make for the ripest grapes – the famous Gimblett Gravels shingle proving optimum. Try a Syrah or Riesling from the region to experience a more modern expression of the region’s offerings.
