Domaine Gaillard, Syrah Terres de Mandrin, 2015
Domaine Jeanne Gaillard
Jeanne is the daughter of Pierre Gaillard, and she has established her own domaine, first in Vins de Pays (now designated IGP - Indication Géographique Protegée), and then in AOC Saint Joseph.
The IGP Syrah comes from 10 hectares of vines planted on sandy soils in Marzas and Malleval. The idea is to make a lighter style, so the grapes, which are partly hand-harvested and partly by machine, are carefully sorted, entirely destemmed, and, after a cold maceration, are fermented at temperatures kept to 25C max. The malolactic and six months of élevage then takes place in a mixture of barrel and tank.

The mighty Rhone River that cuts through the French countryside and lends it name to this auspicious wine region is the uniting force of the great tracts of farmland and vineyards either side of it. Some of the oldest vineyards in France decorate the valley, and the Rhone wine region produces quality wines that can compete with some of the finest Bordeaux and Burgundy wines on the market. It was not always this way however, and as the world catches up to the true richness available in Rhone wines, there are some excellent value wines to be found.
