Tasting Notes
Red Wine
Wonderfully rich and still holding back. Beautiful plum, toasted oak, berry and tobacco character. Firm with a full body. Drinkable now; better with time.
Producer Notes
In 1855, when the original classification was made, it had to be satisfied with the top placing in the second crus. This was probably due to the fact that the property had been bought in a relatively neglected state by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild two years before the classification took place. This meant he had no opportunity to make the estate and the vineyard respectable. Mouton was then no more than a farmhouse and it was not until 1880 that James Rothschild built the elegant dwelling now known as Petit-Mouton, adjoining the chais. The property continued in the family of Rothschild and Baron Philippe took over the running of the property in 1922. He was determined to raise Mouton to a premier grand cru. One of the first things that he did was to introduce mandatory chateau bottling - a fairly revolutionary step for those times. It gave him and his team an opportunity to give wine drinkers the world over an absolute guarantee of genuineness and quality. Today under the ownership of Baroness Philipine de Rothschild the chateau maintains its ranking as producing the finest wines of Bordeaux, and perhaps the finest red wine in the world.
